Can’t beat it on a good day? But what really makes up the region that many of us call home, excluding the double shot coffee.
The region began its story over 180 years ago in the year 1840 and to say it’s come a long way is an understatement.
Now we’re a Metropolis housing over 419 thousand people. Of course this privilege isn’t cheap, our region requires a budget of over 660 million dollars and at least 9.5 million of this gets taken for our 4 thousand kilometers of roads. The Wellington region is built up of 14 different towns and cities, spanning over 8 thousand kilometers squared the region offers much. For those financially inclined our average salary is 99 thousand dollars (I gotta have a chat with my boss), with a low average of 25 thousand dollars and a high average of 419 thousand dollars. Should you be one of those lucky homeowners in our region you’ll be part of the average property price of 1.3 million dollars. With 80 thousand different houses and half of those being rented, that’s a lot of investments. Now the question why’s that a big deal? Well primarily Wellington City Council keeps the housing rates constantly rising, and for those of us renting this keeps our rents rising. You could call this a plea for the rate rising to be kept under 2%, or assist in house building spreading rates costs.

As far as the role we play in our countries politics our region houses/shares 8 different electorates. There are 63 thousand enrolled voters in the Ōtaki electorate, 63 thousand in the Wairarapa electorate, 62 thousand in the Mana electorate, 62 thousand in the Remutaka electorate, 63 thousand in the Hutt South electorate, 54 thousand in the Ōhāriu electorate, 62 thousand in the Wellington Central electorate and 57 thousand in the Rongotai electorate (It should be noted that several of the electorates span outside the Wellington region). Now how does this compare to the actual votes taken in our last elections? There were 46 thousand voters in the Ōtaki electorate, 45 thousand in the Wairarapa electorate, 43 thousand in the Mana electorate, 44 thousand in the Remutaka electorate, 63 thousand in the Hutt South electorate, 44 thousand in the Ōhāriu electorate, 48 thousand in the Wellington Central electorate and 46 thousand in the Rongotai electorate.
Wellington has some pretty special outdoor spaces. 18 different rivers flow throughout our region. There are 499 different hiking trails and 195 different bike trails. Well that’s a ton of facts and figures for you, our region certainly holds a ton, making all the figures worthwhile.
