Poised Taupe is Sherwin-Williams Colour of the Year for 2017

Designers throughout the world eagerly await the announcement of US paint manufacturer Sherwin-Williams’ colour of the year.

And for 2017 it’s a shade the company calls “Poised Taupe”.

Sherwin-Williams calls it “the new neutral, classic yet modern, with the perfect balance of warm and cool”.

The colour is described as a 'new neutral' that is neither warm nor cool, and well suited to classical and modern interiors.

The colour is described as a ‘new neutral’ that is neither warm nor cool, and well suited to classical and modern interiors.

The choice is the result of an extensive survey of homeowners carried out by the company that found that nearly 40 per cent were wanting to see warmer neutrals, such as a warm grey, taupe and (wait for it) beige, which would be a change from the monochrome grey of recent years.

“Consumers yearn for spaces that feel welcoming and hug them as they enter. Earthen brown combined with conservative grey, creating ‘Poised Taupe’, embodies all of these emotions,” says Sue Wadden, director of colour marketing for Sherwin-Williams.

The colour was chosen following an extensive survey of homeowner preferences.

“Not cool or warm, nor gray or brown, Poised Taupe is a weathered, woodsy neutral bringing a sense of cosiness and harmony that people are seeking. It is an ideal backdrop for a wide range of colour combinations, from pastels, to brights, to jewels.”

The company anticipates we will see a lot of of this colour in both residential and commercial interiors.

But what do we feel about the colour, and will it be matched by the equally anticipated Pantone Colour of the Year, to be announced in a few months?
